One of the most common questions we receive is simple: how much does a private investigator cost?
The honest answer is that it depends on experience. Like any profession, investigators who are new to the field typically charge less than those who have spent decades doing the work.
If someone has only been licensed a year or two, chances are you’re going to find them at a much lower rate. In today's market, that might be somewhere around $100 an hour.
Now if you have an investigator like myself, or others in Los Angeles who have been in the field 20+ years, you’re likely looking closer to $150 an hour or more to begin with, depending on the type of case.
We also take a minimum retainer to start the investigation. Speaking for myself, once that retainer is in place we’re off and running.
So when people ask me again, “How much does a private investigator cost?” the real answer is that it depends on the investigator’s experience and the complexity of the case. But if you’re hiring an experienced investigator in Los Angeles, you should expect rates to start somewhere in the $150 per hour range and up.

Why Private Investigators Can Seem Expensive
People sometimes look at hourly investigation rates and assume private investigators are expensive.
But when you look at the bigger picture, that assumption doesn’t always hold up.
One surveillance clip we captured for a client ended up saving them $6.3 million, and the investigation itself only cost a few thousand dollars.
That’s the reality of investigative work. When the evidence is captured at the right moment, the value of that evidence can far outweigh the cost of the investigation.
What you’re really paying for is three things.
- Experience.
- Expertise
- Equipment
Those three factors often determine whether an investigation succeeds or fails.
The Risk of Hiring the Cheapest Private Investigator
A lot of people start their search by looking for the cheapest private investigator they can find. On the surface that sounds logical. Everyone wants to save money.
But what often happens is that those investigators overpromise, burn through the client’s budget, and end up with little or nothing to show for it.
In surveillance work especially, inexperience can ruin a case.
An inexperienced investigator might sit in the wrong place, approach the situation incorrectly, or make themselves obvious to the subject they’re watching. Once that happens, the surveillance is blown.
I always tell people the same thing: hiring a second investigator to redo the first one’s work is far more expensive than hiring the right investigator the first time.
As with most industries, you really do get what you pay for.
What Determines Private Investigator Costs?
There are several factors that influence how much a private investigator charges.
Experience is one of the biggest. Investigators who have spent years in the field develop instincts about timing, positioning, and strategy that simply can’t be taught in a classroom.
The type of investigation also matters. Some cases require more resources, planning, and specialized equipment than others.
