What gear do PIs use?
Most people assume private investigators operate with little more than a phone and a trench coat. The reality is very different.
Professional surveillance investigators rely on a range of specialized equipment designed to capture clear evidence while remaining discreet. Cameras, covert recording tools, and other investigative technology allow investigators to document activity accurately while maintaining distance from the subject.
In this article and in the below video, licensed private investigator Ken Childs explains the real gear investigators use in the field and how those tools support surveillance investigations.

Professional Camcorders for Surveillance
One of the most important tools a surveillance investigator carries is a professional camcorder.
Unlike a cell phone camera, camcorders allow investigators to capture stable video from a distance. Many include powerful zoom capabilities and built-in stabilization systems that help investigators obtain clear footage even when filming from inside a vehicle or across large distances.
For surveillance investigations, clear video is critical. Courts, attorneys, and insurance companies rely on this footage to verify activity, behavior, and timelines.
Covert Cameras Used by Private Investigators
In some situations, investigators must film discreetly in environments where a traditional camera would draw attention.
To accomplish this, investigators often use covert cameras disguised as everyday objects.
Examples include:
• Coffee cup cameras
• Keychain cameras
• Charger cameras
• Small wearable cameras
These tools allow investigators to capture video while appearing to go about normal activity. For example, a keychain camera may allow an investigator to film while simply standing nearby and using a phone.
Do Private Investigators Use Drones?
One of the most common questions investigators receive is whether drones are used during surveillance.
The answer is yes but not as often as people think.
While drones are inexpensive and widely available today, they have limitations that make them impractical for many surveillance situations.
Drones typically:
• Have short battery life (10–15 minutes)
• Produce noticeable noise
• Attract attention in urban environments
Because of these limitations, drones are usually reserved for specific investigative purposes such as documenting accident scenes or capturing a general overview of a location rather than conducting ongoing surveillance.
Backup Cameras for Surveillance Work
Experienced investigators often carry multiple recording devices during an investigation.
If one camera fails, another device can capture the evidence needed. Some investigators also use inexpensive cameras that can be placed temporarily in a location where retrieving the device may not always be guaranteed.
Having multiple tools available allows investigators to adapt to rapidly changing situations during surveillance.
Technology Supports Experience
Although equipment plays an important role in investigative work, tools alone do not make a successful investigator.
Effective surveillance depends on:
• experience
• patience
• awareness
• investigative strategy
The equipment used by investigators simply supports the work being performed in the field.
